Busy, Busy, Busy!!!!

The YM/YW are going to be busy for the next 2 Saturdays. This coming Saturday (21st) we will be joining with the Havelock Ward and go to the temple. We will let everyone know about rides/times/etc.

Then, the following Saturday (28th) we will be having a combined activity that should be lots of fun for everyone. Some may remember a while back when the YM/YW did a treasure hunt around the Island. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, so we are going to take it a step further and do another one, but this time we plan to do it a little different. We're doing it on a Saturday because it is will probably take more than the usual hour. We won't tell all the secrets now, let's just say, "There will be pizza involved!"

A Resounding Success!!!

We would like to publicly thank all of you who helped make our Palmyra fund-raiser (or FUN-raiser as we now refer to it) a big SUCCESS! At first we thought it was going to be a real bummer, to say that we had a slow start would be an understatement. Fortunately, there's lots of dirty cars on the Island and kind-hearted people who didn't mind spending a few bucks for the cause, even if they had to get out and help our YM just a wee bit themselves.(Thanks Tom-Tom and Bro. Kevin) If Brooke hadn't rushed home for her super-absorbent chamois who knows how that would have ended up! As it worked out though, the car wash was a real money machine and it turns out we had some young-men-in-training helping out for a while. (Just ask Jordy and Sis. Thelma and they'll tell you about one particular up and coming Primary guy [which means he is still in nursery, can you guess who it is yet?] who was DANGEROUS when he commandeered the water hose!) Shewwwww, that was a run-on sentence, and speaking of running, here's another clue as to the aforementioned culprit, he runs a lot. His poor mom and dad (and everyone else in earshot with proper running shoes) spends his/her time chasing him around...but he always has a big smile on his face.
Back to the FUN raiser....we learned a lesson from this past Saturday in regards to the bake-sale part of it, namely that it is the cakes and pies that are the best sellers, particularly the former. So next time, and we do plan to have at least one more before the buses roll, we will be asking for mainly those 2 items. Once again, please know we appreciate all you do to help us, all of you!

AND.....Sunday we are proud to say we had a FULL HOUSE...and it is SOOOOOO good when our seats are full of YW!!! We were lucky to have Sister Abby Hancock visit with us. She is from Utah and was visiting with family on Harkers Island. We thoroughly enjoyed Sister Abby. Please keep in touch, and let us know how you are doing and any fun or exciting things that may be happening with the Young Women in your Ward or in the great state of Utah.

God Be With You Till We Meet Again

Sister Dorothy Guthrie passed away early Monday morning. At 96 years old,she was the oldest member of our ward and an amazing example to those around her. Sister Dorothy has been a fixture in the church for as long as any of us can remember.

Not only was Sister Dorothy a great example to all those she came in contact with, she was also our connection to the past. On many occasions she has told of the hardships of the early Latter-Day Saints on the Island and has helped us to realize how blessed we are today.

One memory that will remain with us all when we think of Sister Dorothy will be her strong and unwavering testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Without a doubt, she knew he was a true prophet of God. She has told many times about how she and other members of The Church would often get picked on and teased at school because of their faith. Her mother told her to never deny that Joseph Smith was a prophet. From the day Sister Dorothy was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and until she died, she never once left any doubts about her testimony of the Gospel and the Restoration.

While Sister Dorothy will be missed, there is much comfort the knowledge of the Gospel brings. We know that this separation, although it may be difficult, will only be temporary. Through our Heavenly Father's plan, families can be together forever. One can be sure Sister Dorothy has heard the words "well done, thou good and faithful servant".

The Birth of our Blog

Happy Birthday to our blog! Tonight Katie, Margaret and Brooke witnessed the beginning of this online journal. We have decided to start this blog to help everyone stay up to date with the happenings of the Young Women in the Harkers Island Ward. It is our hope that those who are unable to attend will still be able to stay connected.
Tonight we talked about upcoming activities for the month of June. The end of the school year is rapidly approaching, and to say we are excited is definitely an understatement. Young Women's Camp will be June 10th-14th. We are proud of Brooke for her plans to attend camp this year. Sadly, while Margaret and Katie, avid camp enthusiasts, have other obligations and will be unable to attend. While they will not be there physically, Brooke will be in their thoughts and PRAYERS!
This past Sunday we attended the Seminary graduation/Joseph Smith fireside in Kinston. We enjoyed the remarks made by all speakers, especially Pres. Joel G. Hancock. Brother Shawn Bates, our new 2nd Counselor in the Bishopric sang the song "Brother, I'll Follow You" and did a fantastic job.
The ride home was quite eventful. Between the bad weather and unique sense of humor it made for a interesting ride home. The drive home had us battling the elements. Bad news struck when one of our girls received a text that Harkers Island was without electricity or more commonly known on the Island as "current".
As a side note Margaret was frightened and disturbed by a church bulletin on the ride home. The bulletin simply said, "Piercing saved our lives". Margaret dramatically interrupted all conversations to explain how confused and appalled she was that a church bulletin was condoning body piercings. Much relief was felt when ALL in the car participated in explaining the actual meaning of the sign. You could see the relief wash over her face as she realized that actual piercing was not required to attend church.
We had a fabulous ending to an even better trip. As we approached the Harkers Island Bridge, we all love so much, we saw the most beautiful sight we had seen in a while. Harkers Island had returned to civilization..... we had ELECTRICITY again!
We are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Palmyra trip. Check back here for more updates! We plan on adding every Wednesday.
Sunday, June 8
We had visitors from the Stake and the YM/YW combined for an interesting and uplifting session. We watched a presentation about being the best we can be and not settling for less than our best. Afterward we talked about our upcoming Palmyra trip. A big THANK YOU to all those Sisters who signed up to help with the bake sale this coming Saturday. We hope it is a resounding success.
